How Not To Touch Poison Ivy
If reading the information below will help prevent you from ever touching poison ivy, then I will be one happy horticulturalist.
Profile of Poison Ivy
A plant that causes the most preventable disease in North America. All the experts agree; the best prevention is to avoid touching the rash-causing plant resin. A Poison Ivy rash can be physically harmful and emotionally debilitating. Prevention might be easy if poison ivy grew far from human contact, but unfortunately, it prefers an environment that people also call Home. This may include partially shaded tree lined properties, soil that has been dug and moved around (aka: In Your Garden) and secluded places growing in the corner of a backyard, the side of a shed or fence and among ground cover plantings. As baseball is America’s outdoor pastime, poison ivy is an outdoor exhibit as well.
The Sport of Baseball and the Poison Ivy Sport
Think of the history of poison ivy like the first inning of the ball game. Poison Ivy began when the first wave of European settlers, which included botanists, came to bat and took their swings at the problem. They got to first base by identifying and categorizing the varieties of the poison ivy clan across North America. Stepping next into the batter's box were practitioners of the medical community who strove to balm and treat the deadly itch the plant provoked on human skin. Runners on first and second. And now, up to bat, a Poison Ivy Horticulturist weighs in on the poison ivy debate at the place where human interests intersect with the plant kingdom, and through a Hand-to-Vine Battle with the opposing team—poison ivy—on my clients' properties. I've removed 20+ year old mature poison ivy plants; vines that tipped the scale at 385 pounds per plant, including roots, vines, leaves, seeds and stems.
